Carbonite Computer Backup plans now offer remote deployment and remote policy management capabilities designed to make life a whole lot easier for IT admins and solutions providers who manage clients' IT environments. IT admins using Carbonite Computer Backup now have the option to remotely deploy the Carbonite client in bulk to multiple end users’ workstations. They can then use Carbonite's easy-to-use Web portal to remotely manage backup policies.
Historically, when installing the Carbonite client on multiple workstations, IT professionals were not equipped with powerful tools for bulk deployments. This was fine for very small businesses, but for larger companies with 25, 50, 100 or more employees, a faster method is needed. With Carbonite’s new remote deployment feature, the process of adding Carbonite to multiple workstations is quicker and more efficient than ever before.
Common methods of remote deployment
IT admins and channel partners who want to take advantage of Carbonite’s new capabilities have a few options to choose from. Here’s a quick look at the three most common methods that can be used to remotely deploy Carbonite to multiple workstations:
- Write a script
IT admins can create a script that will allow Carbonite to be deployed and installed onto workstations remotely. A typical remote deployment script would dictate which users should get the software, and that it should be automatically installed on their workstations the next time those users log on to the network.
- Use Microsoft Active Directory
Microsoft Active Directory software authenticates all users in Windows-based network and enforces security policies. It’s also a great way to remotely deploy and install the Carbonite client to multiple workstations. For example, with Active Directory, admins can create a group policy which dictates that everyone should have Carbonite. When the users within that particular group log onto the network, the Carbonite software will be automatically installed.
- Use third party Remote Monitoring & Management (RMM) software
RMMs are particularly popular with IT solutions providers, and they’re another great way to bulk deploy and install the Carbonite client. With RMM software, users can specify which people should have the software installed on their workstations. For a solutions provider, that might mean all the users at a specific client’s company. For an IT pro working directly for an SMB, that might mean all Windows users in the organization. In addition to remotely installing the Carbonite client on multiple workstations, IT pros and solutions providers can specify default backup settings for specific accounts or user groups using Carbonite’s powerful Web-based management portal. The Carbonite client checks back with the management portal every hour to see if backup policies have been changed, and if they have changed, it will apply the necessary updates.
Carbonite also supports the management of multiple backup policies per company. For example, an IT pro or solutions provider can establish backup policies based on what is being protected. Or they can establish backup policies based on who is being protected. For example, you might have different backup polices for the marketing department, the finance department and C-level executives.
